Here I am again, feeling so confused
There you go again, pulling off my shoes
What is it like to be alone? What is it like to be afraid?
What is it like to cast a stone while you carry on a masquerade?
Here I am again, it’s the day after the storm
There you go again, you always kept me safe and warm
What is it like to lose the trust? What is it like down on your knees?
What is it like to feel your own rust? It’s like a silent soliloquy
There you go again, making rings around the sun
When the sun goes down those circles come undone
What is it like to fade away? What is it like to lose desire?
What is it like to feel okay? Laying low, not always aiming higher
and higher and higher...
Now once upon a time they handed down my wings. I learned to fly
up above most anything. Then came the wind, pushed me toward the
sun. Didn’t wanna burn, just wanna have some fun
Chorus:
I’m headin’ down on a lazy afternoon. I can be found
by the green lagoon. Please run with me & make love in the dune.
On a lazy afternoon
Late at night somewhere deep inside a dream
A fantasy ain’t always what it seems. Sometimes you get shot down,
and left to die, just another fool who came falling from the sky (chorus)
Stop...What’s that creepin’ in? That smoke just lit us up again
The tiki torches are burning bright. There are a million stars in sight
Let the music stir your soul and babe lose all control (chorus)
There’s a new moon rising before your eyes
Gone with the fears and the alibis
Yesterday’s drying on the canvas, yes
Where tomorrow’s going is anyone’s guess
The snow’s falling and the heat don’t work
I thought I was passed acting like some kind of jerk
But I’m sitting here freezing drinking this wine
Wishing on music and lyrical rhymes
Outside there’s people crawling the streets
Each with a plan, each with a vision, each with a dream
Clinging to survival just to survive
It’s so easy sometimes to forget you’re alive
Now the puppets they dance in the crib of a child
While the world’s in a cage and promise runs wild
Where hope swallows fear and light smothers black
And everyone’s sailing with the wind at their back
I’ve been trying to reach it but I ain’t got there yet
And all the things that I know I sometimes forget
So it’s back at the start, more lines in my skin
I keep asking myself where to begin
So Heaven help me if I ever get it right
The trumpets will blow and I’ll reclaim my sight
You’ll be sure to know me with the smile on my face
Out of my head like the whole human race
There’s a new moon rising before your eyes
Gone with the fears and the alibis
Yesterday’s drying on the canvas, yes
Where tomorrow’s going is anyone’s guess
Lying late one summer night I swore I heard the wind
Through the screen with a whisper it touched against my skin
It led me to the corridor to a festive street
A Mardi Gras of millions at my feet
We drank all night and danced all day and smoked some in between
“here’s some more, here’s some more” they said “the grass is always green”
Laughed along the countryside and sang out to the stars
We felt the spirits fly from the guitars
Chorus:
Come you skeptics of the sun
Come ‘fore the day is nearly gone
Come while hope is burning right before your eyes
Now it’s time we may shed our disguise
I don’t sleep with strangers and I never much liked to dance
“here’s some more, here’s some more” they said
“now you get your chance Do you know temptation ?”
I smiled and said “we met...we had some wild nights I don’t
want to forget” (chorus)
They tell you it ain’t easy and they’ll say that it ain’t right
Who’s that lonely soul hiding ‘neath the light
They tell you to surrender and when you don’t retreat
You’ll find them falling at your feet (chorus)
Lying late one summer night I swore I heard the wind
Through the screen with a whisper it touched against my skin
It led me to the corridor to a festive street
A Mardi Gras of millions at my feet (chorus)
The day was a memory of a slow moving storm
Now there’s a new lease on living
It’s your time to be born
The child was crying, you heard in your sleep
Some may grow stronger
Some may still weep
While down in the canyon
The sun will lay low
The peak of the mountain is all covered in snow
Bitter she stood, somewhere out of the fold
Here head was on fire
Her heart was so cold
Chorus:
I love you until the day that I die
There’s nothing between us
Except the earth and the sky
Sing me to sleep with a sweet lullaby
There’s nothing between us
Except the earth and the sky
Last night I heard singing
It sounded just like your song
The tune was so pretty but it didn’t play long
So I closed back my eyes
And laid alone in my bed
I sang it over and over
To keep your song in my head (chorus)
Wait, I’ve shown you all I can
You know I’m just a man
In this cold world of flesh and bone
Hear, the tired angels sigh
It’s on them we must rely
But mine’s asleep and your’s has flown
She, she left not long ago
Ten feet deep in snow
Called out her name but she was gone...
Gone, nothing that I could do
Will I get over you or just remain your broken pawn
Chorus:
Even as I close my eyes I can see your face
Even when those lights are turned down low
Even when I hold my ears I can hear your song
The song that played too long
So call when you’re losing face
The past we may erase
Although it’s filled with bitter, bittersweet
Believe, when you hear me say
Although the ties have frayed
I need you to be complete
(chorus)
Over a cool northwestern sea
Flying high and free away from me
To where the cold winds never blow
Words would no more heal the pain and
If we did this all again, I’d ask for you to stay
Just one more night
Baby no matter how hard we tried
When the fire burns out and the rest of it dies
Up in smoke is where it all goes
And now all those hazy and drunken nights
and all the useless & senseless fights have up and gone
I am alone feeling a little stoned
Chorus:
These feelings come’n go
Just like in a circus show
When your heart is on the High Wire
Up in the morning and out on the breeze
Left you crying down on your knees that day
What a day
You would write your poetry
To get you through the worst of me
While I hid inside my head so much unsaid
Chorus:
These feelings come and go
Just like in a circus show
When your heart is on the high wire
Bridge:
This show won’t go on
Until all those clowns are gone
And then you watch me stumble out upon
The high wire
Now you’re over a cool northwestern sea
Flying high and free away from me
To where the cold winds will never blow
Standing high on shaky ground
Listening for that deafening sound
As you watch the city tumble down
Yearning for that place in time
When you can see the moonlight shine
Silhouetting knotty pines and vines
Chorus:
Give it some time, Give it some time
Time, time, time
Give it some time
She left you high and not so dry
The tears were drowning both your eyes
Shadows on the walls at your bedside
Fly away into the sun
The solo flight of a skeleton
Yearning for the unison (chorus)
Daybreak slips away from you
Another dog day afternoon
That cold, gray sky was once a shade of blue (chorus)
Standing high on shaky ground
Listening for that deafening sound
As you watch the city crumble down
Steppin’ off your midnight train, smell the mountain air
Tired eyes, cotton tongue Do you have some change to spare?
Six months on this crazy ride, six months on your track
Five days on these achin’ feet and two on a broken back
Chorus:
Then you go stepping out
Leave me standing here wondering what this game is about
Took me in when I was down, A lonely boy to ride
Played me like a violin laughing as I cried
Fed me all my teeth would pass, prepared me for the least
Took me to that crooked hill and let the vultures feast
Chorus:
Then you go stepping out
Leave me standing here wondering what this game is about
Honey the river’s run dry
And the crops have all died
Guess it’s time to take a ride
Got the pedal to the floor gonna ride this engine until it blows
Watch me take the black highway anywhere it goes (chorus)
The leaves are dying fast ‘neath September’s cold skies
October winds blow, they cut loose and fly
We’re holding our breath with everything they say
On every t.v. and news stand at the start of the day
Seems like everybody’s changing or maybe it’s me
Most of who I knew ain’t who they used to be
There’s a loner alone at a table for one
He’s always bitching and complaining that he never has fun
Chorus
Some night when the stars are out
Meet me in the moonlit meadow
Free from all reality
Sing with me
That moonlight meadow song
There’s a child and he’s walking down a long dirt road
From the school house he carries all the things he’s been told
While the birds of prey circle above the old hill
There’s a drunkard in a tavern who brags of a kill
I’m knocking three times on the ceiling above
But you say you ain’t got time for casual love
Love got you once, love got you twice
Now love’s got your heart all crushed in a vise (Chorus)
One more enemy is circling over my head
If he cuts it any closer someone’s gonna be dead
But I ain’t got no heart, ain’t got no guts
I’m too busy trying to pull my ass out of a rut
They say a storm’s coming, one we’ll never forget
So keep pushing honey or you’re gonna get wet
I can’t say why, all the things I do
Don’t make me try and pull me closer to you (chorus)
I couldn’t possibly be moving at the speed they said
With all the busy thoughts I got running around in my head
And I don’t need you coming on to me if
If you don’t see me dying I don’t know what you see
Old Ed ain’t living down my road anymore
Last night they called his number up to heaven’s sweet door
He was the last of the old folks, last of a breed
And now there’s no one around togrow us the food that we need (chorus)
